The PM&R Sports Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Square in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a one-year accredited program in primary care sports medicine. The fellowship is sponsored by Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine, which is a division of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

This fellowship involves the care of patients with sports, fitness, or recreational activity-related injuries that adversely affect their ability to participate in physical activity. As a fellow, you spend the majority of your time at Mayo Clinic Square in Minneapolis, but also spend one day a week at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

• Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Regenerative Medicine MSK Ultrasound Clinic)
• Musculoskeletal Radiology
• Emergency Medicine
• Sports Cardiology
• Vascular Medicine
• Sports Pulmonology
• Physical Therapy
• Sports Nutrition
• Sports Psychology
• Strength and Conditioning

Elective rotations are available and can occur in multiple areas, such as the Hand Clinic or Foot and Ankle Clinic.

On a regular basis, you will have the opportunity to cover teams of all levels, including the Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) and Minnesota Lynx (WNBA) professional basketball teams, the Minnesota Twins (MLB) professional baseball team, local universities, Minnesota State High School League events, and mass participation sporting events.

The fellowship also includes extensive training in diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound, including injections and other percutaneous procedures. As a fellow, you receive training in advanced regenerative medicine techniques, including platelet-rich plasma and bone marrow aspirate concentrate injections.

During the fellowship, you have ample opportunity to participate in sports medicine-related research. Time and support services are available to facilitate completion of the research requirement.

The PM&R Sports Medicine Fellowship provides a broad exposure to the practice of musculoskeletal physiatry and prepares you for a sports- and musculoskeletal-based practice in an academic or private practice setting.

Accreditation

The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Program history

Mayo Clinic opened the Sports Medicine Center at Mayo Clinic Square in downtown Minneapolis on Oct. 1, 2015. This project was completed in partnership with the Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) and Minnesota Lynx (WNBA) basketball teams, for whom Mayo Clinic is the preferred medical provider. One trainee completes the fellowship each year.

The success of Mayo Clinic Square and its exceptional clientele led the medical providers to create a sports medicine fellowship to share their clinical experience, facilitate research, and train future leaders of our specialty. This Minneapolis-based program shares many resources and faculty with the Rochester-based fellowship program, which was established in 1990.

Graduates of these PM&R Sports Medicine Fellowships have been successful at obtaining high-profile positions in both academic institutions and multispecialty groups around the country, including Mayo Clinic, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, Hospital for Special Surgery, Johns Hopkins University, Cleveland Clinic, Harvard, University of Michigan, Spectrum Health, University of Iowa, University of Washington, Seattle Swedish Hospital, University of Pittsburgh, and Ohio State University.
