Preparing physician-scientists to translate scientific discoveries into medical solutions that improve patient care

Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at Mayo Clinic

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at Mayo Clinic educates students to meet the demands of a career as a physician-scientist. By combining M.D. and Ph.D. training, we prepare our graduates to be leaders in both clinical medicine and in scientific research to significantly impact the future of medicine and science. Our graduates go on to be highly successful in their respective fields of clinical medicine, research, medical education, and leadership.

The MSTP benefits from the exceptional clinical training of Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and the extraordinary research education and resources of Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Mayo Clinic is well-known for its tradition of integrating patient care, research, and education. These connections are reflected throughout our curriculum, student experiences, opportunities, and graduate outcomes.

Program highlights

  • Flexible curriculum. Our curriculum prepares students with a sound foundation in medical training to fully understand all levels of their scientific research and how it contributes to patient care and human health. Above all, it gives students the flexibility to become the physician-scientists they want to be.
  • Unique funding model. Students are fully supported through a guaranteed internal fellowship for up to eight years. This eliminates the need for students to identify a faculty member to provide financial support.
  • Nationwide opportunities. Mayo Clinic has three unique campuses in Rochester, Minnesota; Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona; and Jacksonville, Florida. Students are able to take advantage of opportunities at any of the three campus locations for a truly unique educational experience.
  • Outstanding research and clinical resources. Modern research requires access to cutting-edge technology and research support services. Mayo Clinic provides students access to an unbelievable array of research and clinical resources.

The MSTP has been educating physician-scientists since 1986. In 2003, Mayo Clinic received funding as a Medical Scientist Training Program site from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health. It is currently one of 50 M.D.-Ph.D. programs funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Director's welcome

The Mayo Clinic Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) embodies Mayo Clinic's core value of “the needs of the patient come first” by training outstanding physician-scientists who will advance the science of medicine and translate those discoveries into medical solutions.

The Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offer an exceptional opportunity to a highly select group of students who wish to pursue a combined M.D.-Ph.D. degree. The graduate school faculty is composed of more than 300 world-class investigators in seven graduate school tracks. In 2017, we launched a first-of-its-kind transdisciplinary Regenerative Sciences doctoral training program to develop the next generation of physician-scientist leaders in regenerative science and medicine.

Our vision for the Mayo Clinic M.D.-Ph.D. program is to fully integrate the medical school and graduate school experiences, thereby creating synergy in the activities leading to both degrees. Mayo Clinic is a pre-eminent institution that provides state-of-the-art technologies in medicine, science, and engineering.

We are extremely honored to serve as co-leaders of the Mayo Clinic Medical Scientist Training Program. Our primary goal is to equip our trainees with the skills needed to become the leaders of tomorrow's clinical, research, and educational missions. We encourage you to apply to our MSTP! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
