If you're like me, you might ask yourself, "Why would I ever apply to Mayo Clinic to become a family physician?"
I remember a discussion I had with my father in 1996. He encouraged me to apply to Mayo for residency despite my lukewarm feeling about the idea. So, I told him that if I got an interview, I'd check it out.
In my opinion, the Family Medicine Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, is one of the best-kept secrets in all of family medicine training. We have increased to 27 residents who provide comprehensive primary care in the small farming town of Kasson, Minnesota. The Department of Family Medicine includes more than 60 staff family physicians who care for patients at one of our four Mayo family clinics in Rochester or at Mayo Family Clinic Kasson.
About 20 minutes down the road from Kasson is the Mayo Clinic campus, where we have our family medicine inpatient service to care for our hospitalized patients, a newborn nursery service and the Family Birth Center.
While our residents receive excellent training from subspecialty clinics and services on the downtown Mayo Clinic campus, we have also developed rotations within Mayo Clinic Health System, a system of hospitals and practices located throughout southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin.
Our residency trains confident and dynamic family physicians by emphasizing small-town practice at Mayo Family Clinic Kasson and outstanding added-value rotations at Mayo Clinic and within Mayo Clinic Health System.
Sometimes I laugh thinking about what "lukewarm" had in store for me … an entire career.
