Each program within Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences has a separate application process, with specific application forms, requirements and timelines. And each program offers guaranteed funding to ensure each student's success.

Ph.D. Program

Applications are accepted from Sept. 1 through Dec. 1 for the following academic year. Applicants must submit a personal statement, official transcripts from each college or university attended, and at least three letters of recommendation.

Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences guarantees a five-year internal fellowship to all Ph.D. students. This fellowship covers full tuition, stipend, and benefits, allowing students to freely select a research mentor with no requirement to serve as a teaching assistant.

M.D.-Ph.D. Program

Applicants to the M.D.-Ph.D. Program must submit an online application through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) by Oct. 1 for enrollment in the following academic year. Additional materials, including letters of recommendation, are due by Oct. 15.

Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences guarantees an internal fellowship to all M.D.-Ph.D. students for the duration of the program. Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

Each year, approximately 180 undergraduate students from around the U.S. come to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, to work beside scientists on a broad range of biomedical research questions. A limited number of fellowships also are available at Mayo Clinic campuses in Jacksonville, Florida, and Scottsdale, Arizona. Applicants must complete an online application by Feb. 1 for admission in this 10-week summer program.

Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences provides a $6,000 (before tax) stipend for 10 weeks. From this stipend, students are responsible for their own travel, housing and meals.

Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP)

Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences accepts applications to PREP from underrepresented students who are planning to pursue a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. in biomedical science and have attained a bachelor's degree within the past three years or are seniors about to graduate in a biomedical science discipline. The application deadline is May 1 for applicants planning to begin the following June. Applications received at other times are considered on a space-available basis.

Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences also contributes to the training of a diverse biomedical research workforce by offering research assistantships to 10 qualified PREP students each year. The assistantship provides a salary of $28,000 a year. A second year of support may be available. Students are also eligible for Mayo Clinic benefits, including low-cost, comprehensive medical insurance.
