Meet Our Fellows

The Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship draws trainees from across the U.S. and around the world. While all our trainees have a love of learning and a compassionate approach to patient care, they come from diverse backgrounds, family status, and professional and personal interests.

Our fellows and faculty foster a collegial environment and education-focused culture that provides an inclusive learning experience. Training can be challenging, but our program is close-knit and each fellow brings a dedication to providing stellar patient care as well as a collaborative learning experience.

The decision to train in cardiothoracic anesthesiology at Mayo was an easy one - unparalleled case complexity and volume, dedicated expert faculty, and the ability to tailor my training toward my ultimate career goals.  We have ample exposure to adult congenital heart disease, heart and lung transplantation, complex valvular and aortic disease, mechanical circulatory support, as well as robotic/minimally invasive surgery. We have a robust echocardiography curriculum that exposes us to both transthoracic and transesophageal echo for surgical, interventional, and in-hospital patients. Lastly, stepping into a sub-consultant role has been a unique and invaluable opportunity for me - allowing me to care for more patients in a supervisory role as I transition into independent practice.

Training in the Mayo Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship has surpassed my best expectations. As a small program in a major cardiac surgical referral center, we have unparalleled opportunities and exposure to high-acuity and complex surgery. Furthermore, the structure of the program allows us to reap the benefits of supervising two cases simultaneously while still building our in-room procedural and management skills. This all takes place in a collegial and friendly environment where I feel free to ask questions and learn from world-renowned experts in cardiac anesthesia, surgery, and echocardiography. The experience here has been second to none and will prepare you for any future practice environment.

I chose this fellowship because it provides a unique experience of being able to tailor your education to your personal and professional goals. Trainees are fortunate as each day there is a multitude of high-level cases and no learner competition. Complex cases are performed alongside world-class anesthesiologists, surgeons, and cardiologists in a work environment that I believe is incomparable in collegiality, and well-suited for self-driven learners to feel comfortable challenging themselves. Additionally, the program provides a perfect blend of maintaining your own procedural skills and becoming comfortable in a supervisory role, as fellows provide/supervise patient care under the direction of a staff anesthesiologist in two rooms daily which can have either a resident or nurse anesthetist as the in-room provider. Mayo Clinic is an ideal place to train owing to the fact you are treated as a valued and respected colleague, as well as immersed in an environment built on continued improvement and growth.
