Overview

Most movement disorders are chronic and progressively disabling. Treatment requires well-coordinated, multidisciplinary expert care. Advances in genetics, pharmaceuticals, and surgical techniques offer many new options to the diagnosis and treatment of movement disorders.

The one-year Movement Disorders Fellowship Program at Mayo Clinic in Arizona offers a rich clinical and research experience, including:

  • The diagnosis and treatment of the full spectrum of movement disorders, including:
    • Parkinson's disease
    • Huntington's disease
    • Dystonia
    • Tremor
    • Myoclonus
    • Tic disturbances
    • Gait disturbances
    • Chorea
    • Tardive dyskinesia
    • Other disorders of the basal ganglia
  • Training in movement disorders neurophysiology and the therapeutic administration of botulinum toxin for dystonia, hemifacial spasm, and related disorders
  • Training in deep brain stimulation for advanced Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and dystonia, particularly in preoperative screening, intraoperative brain mapping, and post-operative programming and adjustment of medications
  • The option of one-month or longer rotation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, or Jacksonville, Florida
  • Research opportunities in neurophysiology, clinical trials, and genetics

Your fellowship experience will be busy and rewarding, with ample opportunity to observe and investigate all aspects of movement disorders.

As a fellow, your research experience will be directed towards understanding and applying findings to patient treatment.

Program history

The Movement Disorders Fellowship Program at Mayo Clinic in Arizona began in 1994. Since that time, approximately nine fellows have completed their training in this program. Going forward, it is anticipated that one fellow will complete this program annually.
