Enhancing Learning in Medicine (ELM) is a successful faculty development program which has been completed by 200+ DOM physicians and advanced care providers during small-group, in-person sessions for more than 10 years. ELM helps physicians and advanced practice providers enhance their abilities to teach learners.

Completion of this 10-hour course contributes to eligibility to the Mayo Clinic Academy of Educational Excellence.

The Enhancing Learning in Medicine (ELM) online program is designed to prepare health profession educators to effectively:

  • Create and facilitate education content
  • Assess and evaluate learners
  • Provide direct observation and feedback
  • Contribute to optimal learning

The eight online modules can be completed independently, in dyads, or assigned to small groups or cohorts. Each module includes components of learning science, sound pedagogical principles, and proven best practices which you can immediately incorporate and apply to enhance your skills as an educator. The ELM program consists of eight topics:

  1. Learning Climate
  2. Expectations, Goals, and Objectives
  3. Evaluation: Assessing Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes
  4. Feedback
  5. Managing Learning Interactions
  6. Teaching and Learning
  7. Promoting Learning Beyond Face-to-Face Interactions
  8. Completing Effective Evaluations
