How to read your financial aid offer

Scholarship offer

Your scholarship amount is one of the first things we share in your scholarship Offer email. If you maintain satisfactory academic performance, that scholarship will remain the same for all four years of your medical school career.

After your scholarship amount, you have further options for financial support during medical school in the form of loans and other financial aid opportunities. You can borrow money from the US Department of Education in the form of Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Direct Graduate Plus Loans

First year estimated expenses and budget information

We include the Cost of Attendance (COA) as an attachment to your financial aid offer to give you an idea of what your personal expenses could be. This is an important tool to your medical school career!

The COA can be used to help you compare what your costs could be between different schools. However, it should not be taken as a firm guideline for your personal budget.

Take for example the housing allowance of your COA. This number is extremely dependent on your individual circumstances. Maybe you live with a roommate to drive that cost lower. Maybe you’d rather pay for the convenience of being closer to campus, but plan to bike to class so your transportation costs will be lower. All those things impact how much you spend. It’s important to understand how all your different budget items can impact your overall cost of attendance and what that means for you in the long run!

Use the COA as a tool, not a set guideline for your personal budget.

Ready to accept your offer?

Financial aid offer

Your financial aid offer is a comprehensive overview of all available aid. This will include both scholarship information as well as Federal Direct Loans (if applicable).

How do I accept my offer?

In order to accept all or part of your financial aid offer, you’ll need to access your EdLink account:

  • Navigate to the EdLink Welcome page, click “Financial Aid”
  • Click “Accept or Decline Financial Aid”
  • Select Aid Year “Award Year 2024-2025” and click “Submit”
  • Choose the “Accept Award Offer” tab to accept a full or partial amount, or to decline the loan(s).

How are the amounts broken down?

We bill your tuition and apply your financial aid equally across both billing and disbursements. (Remember, this happens in July and January each year). So you’ll get one-half of your scholarship and one-half of your student loan disbursement in July and the other half in January.

Disbursement schedule information

Billing and your financial aid disbursement occur twice per year, in mid-July, and mid-January.

If applicable, scholarships are applied to your student account. Likewise, any applicable Federal Direct Loan is also applied to your student account. If there is a remaining balance, you’ll be asked to remit payment. If there is a credit to your account, we’ll process a refund from your student account to you.
