It’s a question Mayo Clinic college leaders have been working on for some time – how to advance medical training by introducing innovation to traditional learning approaches, particularly when the traditional involves animals.

Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science continuously evaluates and evolves its medical training to prepare highly-skilled doctors for patients with serious, complex and rare conditions.

College leaders believe there is merit in minimizing the use of large animals where proven, highly effective training alternatives are available; and the college has pioneered many innovative approaches to do so. Emergency medicine training at Mayo Clinic, for example, no longer requires the use of pigs. Faculty members are encouraged to develop other scientifically-sound and leading-edge approaches to ensure tomorrow’s doctors can provide the safest, highest quality care to patients everywhere.
