This internship provides dental assistant students an opportunity to learn and train in specialty-level dentistry — periodontics, prosthodontics, orthodontics, dental sleep medicine, and/or pediatric dentistry. To be eligible for the internship, you must be currently enrolled at Rochester Community and Technical College and selected for a Mayo Clinic rotation.

Non-U.S. citizen applicants

Admission to Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences is open to U.S. workers in the four categories below. Therefore, visa sponsorship is not available.

Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT). The Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences code for the TOEFL iBT is 5784.

Educational transcripts from schools outside the U.S. must be translated (if they are not already in English) and evaluated for U.S. equivalence by an accredited credential evaluation service company prior to submission. Please refer to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services for a list of qualified companies. The applicant pays for the examination and credential-evaluation services.

Tuition and financial aid

Students pay tuition to Rochester Community and Technical College. Mayo Clinic charges no additional fees.

Curriculum

Mayo Clinic is pleased to partner with Rochester Community and Technical College to offer dental assistant students an opportunity to intern in the Department of Dental Specialties. Our clinic offers a unique experience for students, integrating dentistry with medicine and treating patients with complex dental needs.

Rochester Community and Technical College’s Dental Assistant Program requires students to complete an internship in two general dentistry offices and one specialty dental office. Students selected to intern at Mayo Clinic for their specialty-level requirement will be partnered with a licensed dental professional to supervise them during the internship. Students will utilize expanded functions, assist doctors, and perform the role of a dental assistant.

Students will be given weekly evaluations by a licensed dental assistant and dentist to assess their progress over their three-week internship.

Schedule

Students are expected to be present during clinical hours, Monday through Thursday. Clinical hours vary by specialty and are typically eight-to-nine hours per day.
