This externship prepares students at Gateway Community College, Phoenix College, and West-MEC High School for careers as skilled medical assistants experienced in administrative, procedural, and patient care duties.
Application process
Affiliated schools process applications for medical assisting externship positions through the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences.
Current affiliated schools are GateWay Community College, Phoenix College, and West-MEC High School. Affiliated schools must be accredited through CAAHEP.
Prerequisites
To complete a Medical Assistant Externship with Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences, you must be enrolled in a Medical Assistant Program at one of the following affiliated schools:
- Gateway Community College:
- Phoenix College
- West-MEC High School
We do require all students to obtain their own health insurance and CPR certification prior to the start of the externship.
Non-U.S. citizen applicants
Admission to Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences is open to U.S. workers in the four categories below. Therefore, visa sponsorship is not available.

Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT). Scores from the speaking portion of the exam are given particular consideration in admission decisions. Learn more about the exam and register online at the Educational Testing Service.
The Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences code for the TOEFL iBT is 5784.
Educational transcripts from schools outside the U.S. must be translated (if they are not already in English) and evaluated for U.S. equivalence by an accredited credential evaluation service company prior to submission. Please refer to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services for a list of qualified companies. The applicant pays for the examination and credential-evaluation services.
Application instructions
Once you are enrolled in the Medical Assistant Program at an affiliated school, you are eligible to participate in the Medical Assistant Externship at Mayo Clinic by making arrangements through your school’s program director for the admissions process and interview.
Medical Assistant Program prerequisites are determined by affiliated schools. You must successfully complete the required program coursework before you are eligible to complete the externship. Once selected by the affiliated school to participate in Mayo Clinic’s externship, an interview will be conducted for final acceptance.
Tuition and financial aid
Tuition rates are determined by and paid to affiliated schools.
Mayo Clinic does not charge additional fees to participate in this program.
You are responsible for providing your living accommodations and transportation. You may hold outside employment during the program if it does not conflict with your educational responsibilities.
Curriculum
The instruction includes a combination of a select areas of rotation specialties, administrative skills, clinical skills, and procedural skills.

- Neurology
- Hepatology
- Urology
- Pain Clinic
- Transplant Center
- Dermatology
- ENT
- Hematology and Oncology
Through Mayo Clinic's well-planned and supervised externship, you gain medical assisting experience in complex medical problems and diseases, office procedures, and instrumentation and sterile technique.
Schedule
For most of the rotation, your learning schedule includes eight-hour shifts, five days a week, Monday through Friday. We are unable to offer night or weekend opportunities.
