Trainee experience

Throughout the fellowship, learning experiences enable fellows to:

  • Enhance clinical knowledge and practical skills in the assessment, evaluation, diagnosis, intervention, and management of patients undergoing autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation
  • Develop advanced competency in management of chemotherapy and transplant-related complications
  • Gain comprehensive exposure to the full continuum of BMT care from stem cell mobilization and harvest through post-transplant recovery and survivorship
  • Expand clinical versatility through multidisciplinary collaboration with services frequently involved in BMT
  • Acquire expertise in the diagnosis and management of both acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity in all professional interactions
  • Contribute to the advancement of BMT through practice, education, and research

Clinical training and rotations

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Fellowship is composed of rotations in various specialty areas including an elective rotation. These rotations will vary from two to five weeks in length and are subject to availability. The order may vary.

  • Inpatient and Outpatient BMT
  • Infectious disease
  • BMT Consults and Long-term Allogeneic Survivorship Clinic
  • Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T) Therapy
  • Inpatient Leukemia and Lymphoma Services
  • Palliative care
  • Transfusion medicine
  • Radiation oncology
  • Pediatric BMT
  • Benign hematology

Didactic coursework

Didactic education is integrated throughout the fellowship and includes required reading, online learning modules, skills training at the Mayo Clinic Multidisciplinary Simulation Center, Grand Rounds, journal club presentations, and educational conferences as available.

Protected didactic research time is incorporated into the curriculum, providing fellows with opportunities to participate in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and scholarly activity, including abstract submission, presentation and authorship on peer-reviewed publications.

Department and faculty

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Fellowship is coordinated and delivered by a multidisciplinary team of experienced clinicians and educators. Faculty members are selected for both their clinical expertise and their commitment to education and mentorship.

Fellows will work closely with advanced practice providers and physicians across inpatient and outpatient settings and have direct access to faculty through the training program for clinical guidance, mentorship, and professional development.

Evaluation

Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences uses these evaluative tools:

  • Written examination
  • Direct observation and demonstration of skills
  • Self-assessment tests
  • Faculty evaluations and feedback
  • Participation in research, formal presentations, and/or scholarly publications

Mayo Clinic's system of evaluation provides students and faculty with a comprehensive look at individual performance. Fellows who require additional support are guided to appropriate academic and wellness resources, including tutoring and counseling services.

Curriculum enhancements

The curriculum is designed to meet Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences standards and is regularly reviewed and enhanced to reflect advances in transplant medicine, evolving clinical practices, and educational best practices.
