Trainee experience
The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship prepares you for professional practice in community or academic centers.
During this program, you will accomplish the following:
- Enhance clinical knowledge
- Gain practical experience in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders
- Increase critical-thinking skills
- Demonstrate the team-centered approach to patient care
- Foster leadership opportunities
Clinical training and rotations
The fellowship includes the following clinical rotations:
- General gastroenterology
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Esophageal disorders
- Motility and functional disorders
- Pancreas and hepatobiliary disease
- Advanced therapeutic endoscopy
- Inpatient gastroenterology
- General hepatology
- Inpatient hepatology
- Research which may include poster presentation, case report, or quality improvement project
- Elective rotation
Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences is committed to developing and maintaining the best education programs. The curriculum and other aspects of this program are assessed constantly and changed as necessary to ensure the highest quality training.
Didactic coursework
The fellowship includes lectures, shadowing, online learning modules, required reading, Grand Rounds, and educational conferences.
Schedule and hours
The learning schedule includes weekday hours with approximately 40 hours per week. This does not include additional time spent on didactic responsibilities.
Department and faculty
The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship is coordinated and taught by the clinical, scientific, and technical staff of Mayo Clinic.
Faculty members are chosen for their commitment to teaching, as well as clinical practice and research. Many have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields. Fellows will work closely with nurse practitioners and physician assistants as well as physicians in subspecialty clinics and hospital rotations. You have direct access to these individuals throughout the training program.

As a fellow of Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences, you are encouraged to learn from these valuable resources by attending all conferences, lectures, and seminars prepared for students, residents, fellows, and consulting staff.
Evaluation
Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences uses these evaluative tools:
- Written examination
- Demonstration of skills
- Self-assessment exercises
- Faculty reviews
- Research participation, formal presentations, or publications
Mayo Clinic's system of evaluation provides students and faculty with a comprehensive look at individual performance. This allows faculty and administrative staff to direct students who are experiencing academic difficulty to the appropriate support resources, including tutoring programs and counseling opportunities.
