Application Process

Positions

Up to three candidates are accepted on a competitive basis each year for the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Medical Oncology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota. The program admits students in the spring (March start) and in the fall (August start).

Admission requirements

Prerequisites

To be eligible to apply for the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Medical Oncology Fellowship, you must meet the following requirements upon acceptance into the program:

  • Graduated from an accredited nurse practitioner or physician assistant program, with a minimum of a master's degree
  • Hold a current license as master's or doctorate-prepared nurse practitioner or physician assistant in the state of Minnesota or be eligible to apply for MN licensure at the time of offer acceptance
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification*

*You do not need proof of BLS certification at the time of application but must provide documentation of completion prior to fellowship start date.

Candidates are selected based on scholastic performance and work experience, as well as volunteer experience, leadership qualities, and personal qualities and skills.

Non-U.S. citizen applicants

Admission to Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences is open to U.S. workers in the four categories below. Therefore, visa sponsorship is not available.

  1. U.S. citizens
  2. U.S. nationals
  3. Lawful permanent residents
  4. Asylees and refugees

Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT). Scores from the speaking portion of the exam are given particular consideration in admission decisions. Learn more about the exam and register online at the Educational Testing Service.

The Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences code for the TOEFL iBT is 5784.

Educational transcripts from schools outside the U.S. must be translated (if they are not already in English) and evaluated for U.S. equivalence by an accredited credential evaluation service company prior to submission. Please refer to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services for a list of qualified companies. The applicant pays for the examination and credential-evaluation services.

There are two application windows for the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Medical Oncology Fellowship:

Application instructions

Complete the following steps to apply:

  1. Create an account to begin the online Application for Admission.
    • Select - Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences
    • Select - NP PA Medical Oncology Fellowship (RST)
  2. Complete each section of the application and submit.
  3. After submission, view the required Supplemental Items and Documents
    • Upload each required item in the Supplemental Items section
    • Complete the Recommendation Request section

Additional required items

  • CV/resume.
  • Two letters of recommendation are required and must be completed in the Recommendation Request section. Each recommender will receive an email with a link to upload a letter. Suggested recommendation types:
    • Academic (professor or faculty)
    • Professional (preceptor, supervisor, co-worker)
  • Personal statement (one-page maximum) is to be uploaded in the Supplemental Items section and address the following:
    • What influences your interest in medical oncology (solid tumor cancers)?
    • Describe how your past personal, educational, and professional experiences have prepared you to be successful in this fellowship.
    • Tell us about your goals for fellowship and how the fellowship will help you accomplish future career goals.
  • Unofficial college transcripts may be uploaded in the Supplemental Items for application purposes. If accepted, official transcripts will need to be emailed or mailed directly to the program.

Interview process

The selection committee carefully reviews each application. Individuals considered for acceptance are offered interviews. Interviews are conducted via Zoom and are behavioral-based.

Acceptance

Acceptance letters are mailed around May 15 for the fall admission and Dec. 15 for the spring admission. Your response is expected within 3-5 days.
