Curriculum
Trainee experience
The NPPA Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship prepares you for professional practice in the field of endocrinology. Learners who complete the program will be well-equipped to handle a broad range of endocrine disorders across the adult lifespan in a wide variety of locations, including both outpatient and acute care settings.
During this program, you will learn about the following areas of endocrine care:
- Outpatient diabetes management
- Inpatient diabetes management
- Diabetes technology
- Obesity
- Thyroid disorders
- Bone and calcium disorders
- Pituitary, gonadal, and adrenal disorders
- Transgender health
Didactic coursework
Didactic coursework may include, but is not limited to, the following:
- Lectures
- Online modules
- Medical grand rounds
- Educational conferences
- Tumor board conferences
Clinical training and rotations
Learning experiences and rotations may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Diabetes educators (nursing and dietician)
- Simulation center activities, including diabetes technology showcase
- Outpatient diabetes and endocrine subspecialty clinics
- Inpatient hospital service rounds
Off-service rotations may be experienced with the following service lines — radiology, neurosurgery, general surgery, ENT surgery, nephrology, hepatology, inpatient and outpatient nutrition, weight loss clinic, and bariatric surgery.
Schedule and hours
For the majority of the fellowship, the learning schedule includes primarily weekday hours (40 hours per week). This does not include additional time spent on didactic responsibilities. During inpatient rotation, hours may flex to include weekends. If weekend hours are worked, weekday time off is provided in lieu.
Department and faculty
The NPPA Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship is coordinated and taught by an interdisciplinary team, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, allied health, and physician staff in the Division of Endocrinology at Mayo Clinic. Rotations outside of the division may also occur.
Faculty members are chosen for their commitment to teaching, as well as clinical practice and research. Many have a broad range of clinical, research, and publication experience and are highly regarded in their fields. You will have direct access to these individuals throughout your training, allowing you to learn from experienced practitioners in the endocrine field.

Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, is a comprehensive medical facility providing advanced programs in education and research that support the highest quality patient care. Campus activity is conducted in Mayo Clinic Hospital and the interconnected Davis building.
Mayo Clinic Hospital is a tertiary care hospital providing comprehensive services to a broad range of patients, including transplant patients.
The ambulatory clinic facilities provide clinical services ranging from primary care to specialty care across the continuum. Additionally, hospital and clinic-based procedural units offer state-of-the-art services to patients across the spectrum of wellness.
Evaluation
Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences uses these evaluative tools:

Mayo Clinic's system of evaluation provides students and faculty with a comprehensive look at individual performance. This allows faculty and administrative staff to direct students who are experiencing academic difficulty to the appropriate support resources, including tutoring programs and counseling opportunities.
