Participants in the PULSE program at Mayo Clinic

Program overview

Program length: 2-4 months
Internship class size: Approximately 8 students
Location: Rochester, Minnesota
Stipend: $3,000 (per 8-week period)

The Program for Undergraduate Learning in Structural Heart Disease and Echocardiography (PULSE) allows currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students to participate in cardiovascular imaging and structural heart disease research. The internship is typically eight weeks in duration, with a potential opportunity for extension. The program is designed to expose students to biomedical imaging careers through tailored research projects, structured education in research methodology, and weekly faculty-led lectures.

Curriculum

A faculty mentor directs each student's Program for Undergraduate Learning in Structural Heart Disease and Echocardiography (PULSE) experience for the research project. Each student’s experience is tailored to their assigned mentor and research project. The Mayo Clinic Institutional Review Board reviews all research projects, when appropriate.

To successfully complete the program, you must:

  • Comply with all program and institutional policies
  • Participate in an ongoing project investigation
  • Develop skills in research methodology
  • Participate in assigned educational activities
  • Present a written summary and oral presentation of your research project at the end of the program

Schedule and time commitment

Typical business days are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Selected student interns will work with their mentor to determine a mutually agreeable schedule.

Interns are required to commit to a minimum of 20 hours a week at Mayo Clinic to work on their research project. Interns may choose to work more than the minimum, but total hours should not exceed 40 per week.
