Meet Our Fellows

The Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship draws trainees from across the U.S. and around the world. While all our trainees have a love of learning and a compassionate approach to patient care, they come from diverse backgrounds, family status, and professional and personal interests.

Our fellows and faculty foster a collegial environment and education-focused culture that provides an inclusive learning experience. Training can be challenging, but our program is close-knit and each fellow brings a dedication to providing stellar patient care as well as a collaborative learning experience.

Fellowship at Mayo Clinic has given me the chance to train in an environment that is intensely education focused and genuinely supportive. In addition to working alongside world class anesthesiologists, surgeons, and echocardiographers, one of the most distinctive aspects of the program is the flexibility to either supervise multiple cardiac rooms or sit my own cases when I want more hands-on experience. That structure creates exceptional exposure to a high volume of complex cardiac cases while also helping me develop the leadership and decision-making skills needed to manage several rooms at once. The program has also fostered a healthy work life balance without compromising the depth or quality of training. I feel confident that the skills I’ve built here will translate seamlessly into any future role, whether in academics or private practice

When evaluating potential fellowship programs, my goal was to find an institution that would provide exposure to the true breadth of cardiac pathologies I may come across in my future practice. I absolutely found this in Mayo Clinic. The flexibility of this program has also allowed me to uniquely tailor my education to my professional goals and future practice setting. Our cardiac surgery volume far exceeds the small class size of this fellowship, which means that each fellow can choose from an array of complex cases each day without feeling like we are competing for the best learning opportunities. Beyond this, what I feel truly sets this program apart is its faculty. This institution houses many of the leading experts in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, cardiac surgery, and cardiology. In addition to their many accolades, they are also some of the most incredibly patient and effective educators I have had the privilege of learning from. Nearing the mid-way point of my training, I can confidently say I would choose this program again without hesitation.

Morgan Sorensen, M.D.Morgan Sorensen, M.D.

Residency: Loyola University Medical Center

I initially chose anesthesiology because I enjoyed complex physiology, pharmacology, procedures, and dynamic situations. It’s rewarding to care for the sickest individuals in high-risk surgical procedures. Learning adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic allows for me to care for high acuity patients in a wide variety of cardiothoracic cases. Each day presents a new challenge and a great learning opportunity. The case volume is high, and fellows have the opportunity to find and select whichever cases will contribute the most to their learning. We learn echocardiography for 4-5 months directly from intraoperative cardiologists alongside our anesthesiology consultants. The environment in the ORs is collegial and we develop wonderful relationships with our CRNAs, residents, perfusionists, cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, and OR support staff. I am confident that this fellowship has prepared me to provide exceptional care to my future patients.
