David Sanborn, M.D.

When selecting your career path, how did you come to decide on Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant?

I was drawn to transplant pulmonology because it combines longitudinal patient relationships, a variety of different practice areas, and intellectually stimulating applications of physiology. I also found the multidisciplinary nature of transplant medicine to be very attractive, and I was inspired by the opportunity to help patients through some of the most challenging moments of their lives. It’s a field that requires both clinical precision and compassion - skills that I hope to practice throughout my career.

What attracted you to Mayo Clinic?

I was attracted to Mayo for fellowship for the same reasons I was attracted for residency: its unwavering commitment to putting the needs of the patient first. This, combined with a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to care allow for a level of care that is unique to this institution. I was also drawn to the strong academic environment, where clinical excellence, research, and education are deeply integrated. The opportunity to work alongside and learn from leaders in the field while contributing to meaningful innovation made Mayo Clinic an ideal place to grow both professionally and personally.

A little more about me.

When I'm not at work I am usually doing something around town with my friends and family. We are big foodies and are always looking to try new places in town. I also love to cook, garden, and watch classic movies.

Fellowship years: 2023-2024

I gained immense enjoyment and knowledge from my fellowship at Mayo Clinic. The mentorship I received was outstanding, providing exceptional support throughout. I enjoyed experiencing the complexity of cases that I encountered, including those involving multiple solid organ transplants alongside lung transplants. Furthermore, close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team highlighted the robustness of my knowledge base and the effectiveness of cooperation across various transplant services. I found great satisfaction in engaging with other services such as ECMO, the pathology lab, and the immunology lab. Rotating through the Mayo Clinic's Florida campus proved to be both rewarding and beneficial to my learning experience.
