Physicians in the Department of Neurology specialize in diagnosing, treating and researching the hundreds of conditions and diseases that can affect the brain and nervous system. Mayo Clinic neurologists work closely with specialists in neurosurgery, ophthalmology, neuro-oncology, oncology, psychiatry and psychology, pain management, sleep disorders, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and many other areas to offer patients comprehensive care.

Many physicians are active in ongoing research programs, and the department offers several programs for physicians seeking residency or fellowship specialty training.

The Behavioral Neurology Fellowship program at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, is a one- or two-year fellowship that provides you with ample opportunities to gain the knowledge and experience required to diagnose and treat patients with a variety of complex neurological conditions. We are committed to providing you with a rich learning environment full of clinical, educational, and research opportunities that will equip you to pursue the career path of your choice.

Clinical opportunities consist of seeing patients in the behavioral neurology clinic, rapidly progressive dementia clinic, neurorehabilitation, and various electives, such as movement disorders, cerebrovascular neurology, autoimmune neurology, and many others. Educational opportunities include but are not limited to participating in the Mayo Clinic Behavioral Neurology lecture series which provides an update on the diagnosis, treatment, and mechanistic understanding of neurodegenerative diseases.

You will have numerous opportunities to teach other medical students and trainees as well as give formal lectures. Fellows frequently engage in scholarly activities with our faculty and large-scale studies run through the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. Our fellows regularly present their research at regional, national, and international conferences.

Graduates of the Behavioral Neurology Fellowship have gone on to work in a variety of practice settings at both private practice clinics and academic institutions. Among those who have pursued careers in academic settings, many have made major contributions to the field of behavioral neurology and are leaders in their respective divisions and departments.

Advisers

You will be assigned a faculty adviser who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. The adviser also serves as a contact point, introducing you and your family to Mayo Clinic and the communities in which you will train.

Visiting professors

Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during morning and late afternoon lectures. Residents and fellows are encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities to interact with experts from other academic centers and are relieved from clinical assignments to do so.
