Department and Faculty

The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, treats people who have disorders of the heart, aorta and blood vessels. Mayo Clinic's cardiovascular care center is one of the largest in the U.S., with cardiovascular surgeons performing more than 4,000 cardiovascular operations each year using state-of-the-art technology, including minimally invasive techniques.

At Mayo Clinic, physicians collaborate to determine the most appropriate care for each patient. Cardiovascular surgeons work with specialists in cardiovascular diseases, pediatric cardiology and other areas to care for adults and children.

Faculty

Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have published and lectured extensively and are recognized leaders in their fields. Fellows have direct access to these individuals throughout the Cardiovascular Surgery Fellowship.

Advisers and mentors

Each fellow is assigned a staff adviser to review his or her progress and career goals. Your mentor meets with you periodically throughout the fellowship to ensure that your educational needs are being met.

Visiting professors

Each year, the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery hosts the John W. Kirklin Named Visiting Professorship in Cardiovascular Surgery. This event is made possible with support through an endowment from John W. Kirklin, M.D., and Margaret K. Kirklin, M.D. It has become one of the division's most important academic activities and includes rounds and lectures with nationally and internationally renowned cardiovascular surgeons.

In addition, many other prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during conferences and special presentations. Fellows can meet with these individuals to discuss topics in the visiting professors' area of expertise. You are encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.
