Department and Faculty

Members of Mayo Clinic's Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery provide the highest quality surgical services in a caring and efficient manner, while sustaining outstanding programs in research and education. This division — one of the first of its kind in the country — is fully integrated with all the medical services available throughout Mayo Clinic.

Experts in all areas of colon and rectal disease consult with specialists in other departments, such as oncology and gastroenterology, to provide the best care to every patient every day. Colon and rectal surgeons evaluate elective preoperative patient evaluations, perform operative procedures, conduct postoperative care and manage emergency colorectal conditions. Minimally invasive surgery and enhanced recovery pathways are a significant part of the practice. Colon and rectal surgeons work with state-of-the-art equipment to perform open, laparoscopic and robotic surgical cases.

Faculty

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, consultants are also committed to scientific advancement. Faculty members have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields. You are assigned to an individual consultant service, which fosters a strong mentor-trainee relationship throughout your training in the Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency.

Advisers and mentors

You are assigned a dedicated faculty adviser who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. Trainees meet with their advisers periodically throughout the program to review their progress and career goals, and ensure that their educational needs are being met. Your adviser also serves as a contact point for introducing you and your family to Rochester, Minnesota, and the Mayo Clinic system.

Visiting professors

The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery hosts a visiting professor twice a year featuring national and world leaders in colon and rectal surgery. They present their work during lectures and have informal discussions with trainees. You are encouraged to take full advantage of these educational opportunities.
