Meet The Faculty
The Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, offers a full range of dermatologic care for both common and rare problems of skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes.
The department has 31 board-certified physicians with expertise in the areas of medical, surgical, and pediatric dermatology.
Mayo Clinic has more than 44,000 dermatology outpatient visits each year, and the inpatient dermatology service at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus cares for more than 400 patients annually. Some of these patients have unusual or complicated dermatological problems and are referred by their physicians; many are self-referred. The Division of Dermatopathology and Cutaneous Immunopathology has more than 35,000 skin pathology specimens come through each year.
Faculty
In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have published and lectured extensively and are well-regarded in their field. You will have direct access to these individuals throughout your training program.
Nneka Comfere, M.D.
Dr. Comfere's clinical practice includes dermatology and dermatopathology. She currently serves as Division Chair of Dermatopathology and Cutaneous Immunopathology in the Department of Dermatology and Co-Director of Mayo Clinic's Dermatology Digital health, Artificial Intelligence, and Innovations Program. Dr. Comfere earned a doctor of science in Biochemistry from Florida State University and an M.D. degree from Mayo Clinic Alix Medical School at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her Dermatology Residency and Dermatopathology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic as well.
READMORE Dr. Comfere's scholarly activities focus on assessing the role of provider-provider communication failures in diagnostic tests, impact of communication failures on diagnostic error and healthcare delivery outcomes in digital health, including digital pathology and the development and assessment of artificial intelligence algorithms for diagnosis and outcome predictions in dermatology and dermatopathology. Outside of work, Dr. Comfere enjoys traveling the world with her husband and three children, skiing, hiking, biking, and exploring our national forests and parks. She also enjoys the visual and performing arts. At home, she spends time testing out new recipes and reading. |
Emma Johnson, M.D.
Dr. Johnson grew up in New Mexico, received a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Chemistry from Middlebury College, and received her Medical Doctorate from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She completed her Dermatology Residency and Dermatopathology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She briefly returned to her home state of New Mexico to practice both clinical dermatology and dermatopathology, but was drawn back to the Midwest.
READMORE Her clinical and pathologic interests include cutaneous lymphoma, granulomatous skin disorders, and pregnancy dermatoses. She enjoys teaching clinical dermatology and dermatopathology. When asked what her favorite part of her job is, she is quick to respond, "the team of colleagues, support staff, learners, and teachers is unbeatable!" She particularly enjoys the ability to collaborate with other specialists in the diagnosis and management of complex patients with cutaneous lymphoma. When Dr. Johnson is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, and dogs (labrador retriever and french brittany). She also enjoys reading, exercising, and exploring the outdoors. |
Julia Lehman, M.D.
Dr. Lehman, a dermatologist and dermatopathologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, thoroughly enjoys her practice seeing patients, reading out dermatopathology, directing the Mayo Clinic Immunodermatology Laboratory, and serving as Research Chair of the Department of Dermatology. She was born and raised in the United Kingdom before moving to Wisconsin. She went ot the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, for her undergraduate and medical degrees, and a Visiting Medical Student rotation with the Dermatology department at Mayo Clinic solidified her interest in dermatology, as well as in the residency program at Mayo Clinic. She completed her Dermatology Residency and Dermatopathology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic before joining staff in 2011.
READMORE Her clinical and academic interests include autoimmune blistering diseases, graft-versus-host disease, lichen planus, and other inflammatory skin conditions. Outside of work, she can be found playing tennis, reading books in her "she shed," dining out in Rochester with her family, or taxiing her two daughters around town. |
Carilyn Wieland, M.D.
Dr. Carilyn Wieland (like ‘Carolyn’ but with an ‘I’, WEE-land) is our Dermatopathology Fellowship and Dermatology Residency Program Director. She grew up in northwestern Illinois and attended medical school at the University of Chicago before coming to Mayo Clinic for the dermatology residency and dermatopathology fellowship. A summer research experience as an undergraduate introduced Dr. Wieland to the amazing resources and culture at Mayo Clinic, and these opportunities and environment inspired her to return for residency. She has been on as faculty ever since! Dr. Wieland especially enjoys discussing cases that require clinical and pathologic correlation with residents and promoting topics of equity and diversity in dermatology. Her clinical and academic interests include autoimmune blistering disease, alopecia, and digital pathology.
Outside of work, you might find her training for her next half marathon (or maybe even cross-country skiing in the winter), taking care of her chickens, or enjoying her favorite local Pho restaurant with her family.

Advisers and mentors
You will be assigned a faculty adviser who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. Your adviser also will serve as a contact point, introducing you and your family to Rochester and the Mayo Clinic system.
Visiting professors
Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during noon and/or morning lectures and participate in hospital rounds. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.
