Department and Faculty
The cerebrovascular service at Mayo Clinic is composed of physicians and allied health staff from neurosurgery, neurology, radiology, critical care and anesthesiology. The entire spectrum of cerebrovascular disorders is greatly represented and treated at the main site of training (Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida) and affiliated hospitals (UF Health Jacksonville and Wolfson Children's Hospital). All faculty members are highly motivated to teach, and their priority is to ensure an unparalleled training experience.
Many interventional cases are routine, which allows fellows to become skilled in the management of typical neurosurgical problems. However, there are also many cases that, given their complexity, are referred to our neurologists and neurosurgeons for evaluation and treatment from other Mayo campuses or other medical centers.
Patients with complex vascular disorders from the local area or abroad also self-refer themselves to Mayo, seeking treatment at a renowned and trusted facility. Management of these challenging cases is conducted using a multidisciplinary team approach, with feedback from all involved teams, which broadens the educational experience of the trainees.
Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida is a high-volume center for complex cerebrovascular cases, including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), carotid artery disease and other rare conditions, including failure of a previous treatment. Most patients are enrolled in clinical trials and registries, and training provides broad exposure to traditional and new or investigational endovascular devices with a special focus on safety.
Treatment modalities vary from conventional open surgical techniques, such as extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) bypass and clipping, to advanced endovascular revascularization and new nonconventional endovascular modalities based on the patient's need.
Faculty
In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's neuroendovascular members are highly committed to teaching and developing trainees to become professionals. The department's faculty is heavily involved in clinical research and participates in national and international courses for training and trials.
Academically, the team is active in publishing and lecturing, and all faculty members are board certified or board eligible in their specialty and are well-regarded for their subspecialty and area of expertise.
The cerebrovascular team faculty members include:
- W. Chris Fox, M.D. (open and endovascular neurosurgery)
- Thein Huynh, M.D. (interventional neuroradiology)
- David Miller, M.D. (interventional neuroradiology)
- Rabih Tawk, M.D. (open and endovascular neurosurgery)
