Meet the Faculty

The Division of Anatomic Pathology has over 60 pathologists in Rochester, Minnesota, with subspecialty expertise covering the entire field of surgical pathology. The division is organized around working groups dedicated to specific organ systems, but all members contribute service to general areas as well, such as frozen section lab, autopsy, and cytology.

Mayo Clinic Laboratories is the referral center for Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic Laboratories specializes in esoteric laboratory testing for health care organizations throughout the United States and around the world. Mayo Clinic Laboratories' mission is to support the local delivery of laboratory services through the provision of exceptional reference laboratory services and by providing support services that facilitate and augment community integration efforts.

Facilities

The Division of Anatomic Pathology is supported by a full-service histology and immunohistochemistry laboratory, an active electron microscopy section and a growing in situ hybridization lab. The hospital surgical pathology practice is unique in its heavy reliance on rapid frozen section diagnosis, providing trainees a valuable opportunity for immediate correlation of gross and microscopic pathology.

The gastrointestinal (GI) and liver pathologists work closely with the clinical Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. It is the largest practice of its kind in the United States. Each year, members of the division perform approximately 30,000 minimally invasive endoscopic procedures in state-of-the-art facilities.

Faculty

The core of the GI and liver working group includes a number of specialists with interest in gastrointestinal and liver pathology. Several other pathologists also participate in the GI portion of the practice.

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many faculty members have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields. You have direct access to these individuals throughout the training program.

Advisers and mentors

Fellows are assigned dedicated faculty mentors who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. You meet with your mentors periodically throughout the entire residency to review progress and career goals, and ensure that your educational needs are being met. Mentors also serve as a contact point for introducing you and your family to Rochester, Minnesota, and the Mayo Clinic system.

Visiting professors

Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during lectures, participate in hospital rounds and have informal discussions with trainees. You are encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.

From the Program Director

Lizhi Zhang, M.D.Thank you for your interest in the GI/Liver Pathology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic! We are proud to offer one of the premier training programs in the nation, distinguished by the depth and diversity of our case material. Our high-volume practice provides fellows with a balanced case load including all aspects of gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreatobiliary cases. These cases are composed of routine and consult cases, biopsies, surgical specimens, and adult as well as pediatric cases. We are confident that fellows in our program will master strong diagnostic skills in GI/Liver pathology, while gaining early expertise in rare and complex conditions.

Our curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning, guiding fellows from supervised case sign-out at the program’s start to independent practice by its conclusion. Fellows engage fully in daily practice, from initial slide review and ancillary test selection to multidisciplinary consultations with subspecialty experts. Our consult service further enriches training by exposing fellows to challenging cases alongside nationally and internationally recognized academic pathologists in GI/liver pathology.

Our dedicated faculty, one of the largest GI pathology groups in the nation, with expertise spanning liver, pancreaticobiliary, inflammatory bowel disease, transplant pathology, and more, are deeply committed to education and research. Fellows actively contribute to tumor boards, intradepartmental conferences, research projects, and education offered to residents and clinical fellows.

At Mayo Clinic, our patient-centered mission drives collaboration and teamwork with clinical colleagues, creating an unparalleled training environment. We invite you to explore our website to discover more about the GI/Liver Pathology Fellowship and welcome any questions you may have.
