Meet The Faculty

The Division for Palliative Medicine at Mayo Clinic delivers intraprofessional team-based care for patients and families dealing with serious illness. Care is led by board-certified, subspecialty palliative medicine clinicians and uses a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, relying on input from physicians, advanced practice clinicians, pharmacists, nurses, chaplains, social workers, and other allied health professionals in formulating a plan of care to relieve suffering in all areas of a patient's life.

Palliative medicine is intimately aligned with the primary values, mission, and vision of Mayo Clinic. The Division of Palliative Medicine involves resources, support, and collaboration from all sites across the Mayo system. This includes Rochester, Minnesota; Jacksonville, Florida; and the community-based practices within Mayo Clinic Health System. This unique partnership leverages the strengths of each individual site to maximize our mission. The Division also has strong collaboration with our community partners through the Phoenix Palliative Medicine Education Consortium and Hospice of the Valley.

Palliative medicine supports strategic growth in areas such as transplant, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurosciences.

From the program director

Natsu Fukui, M.D.Welcome!

Thank you for your interest in the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Phoenix, Arizona. Our fellowship program was developed in 2007 and has provided the clinical and academic foundation for our trainees to provide personalized care for their patients with advanced illnesses.

This fellowship program is based on the integration of a multidisciplinary team caring for each patient. Our team consists of physicians, advanced nurse practitioners, social workers, and chaplaincy. Each of these individuals brings a unique skill set forward to benefit patients and their families. Mayo Clinic in Arizona also has a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship, and our fellows learn collaboratively.

Mayo Clinic is consistently ranked one of the top medical institutions in Arizona, as well as nationally. We have expertise in virtually every area of medicine and surgery, providing integrated multidisciplinary, patient-centered care to patients and families with complex serious illness.

Mayo Clinic has enjoyed long-standing collaboration with Hospice of the Valley. Founded in Phoenix in 1977, Hospice of the Valley is the largest not-for-profit hospice in the country. Sherman Home, a 12-bed palliative care unit, is located on the Mayo Clinic campus. Hospice of the Valley also offers a dedicated palliative care unit for pediatric patients at Ryan House and a facility for patients with advanced cognitive diseases at Gardiner Home. You will have the opportunity to work in each of these facilities.

Our fellowship program is designed to provide a strong clinical experience in multiple clinical settings — hospital, clinic, hospice units — and the home. You gain clinical expertise not only in clinical management of complex diseases, but also in the ability to communicate effectively when conversations become difficult.

This website is designed to provide an overview of our program. Our goal is to provide an environment that fosters your professional and academic growth. If you have additional questions, please contact us for more information.

Thank you for your interest in our program.
