The Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, is the largest department of medicine in the world. Approximately 600 faculty members are engaged in patient care and research in all areas of internal medicine, both generally and within the subspecialties.

Because of our size, we are able to choose the faculty members who interact with residents based on not only their interest in education but also their abilities. All faculty members are provided the opportunity for dedicated training in how to teach residents.

Faculty

Mayo Clinic's clinical and research faculty members are committed to teaching and the growth of medical knowledge. The faculty is renowned for mastery of both the art and science of medicine with great attention to the patient's history and physical examination.

Faculty members publish and lecture extensively and are well-regarded in their fields. Residents have direct access to these individuals throughout the Internal Medicine Preliminary Residency.

The Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester ranks in the top 10 departments of medicine nationally in National Institutes of Health funding for research. Annual scholarly productivity for Department of Internal Medicine faculty averages more than 5,000 original peer-reviewed publications a year and more than 1,700 book chapters, editorials and review articles a year. This level of faculty scholarship provides a rich environment for resident research and contributes to a high level of resident productivity.

Advisers and mentors

Every resident is assigned faculty advisers who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. The advisers serve as personal mentors throughout the residency. We also have a mentor-mentee program that allows established residents to assist incoming residents with transitioning to Rochester and Mayo Clinic.

Visiting professors

The Department of Internal Medicine invites scores of academic faculty members to visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work at Medical Grand Rounds and other conferences, as well as participate in hospital rounds. In addition, internal medicine residents host a visiting professor of their choice annually. Residents are encouraged to take full advantage of these learning opportunities.
