Meet Our Fellows

The Mammography/Women's Imaging Fellowship draws trainees from across the U.S. and around the world. While all our trainees have a love of learning and a compassionate approach to patient care, they come from diverse backgrounds, family status, and professional and personal interests.

Francisco Maldonado, M.D.

Francisco Maldonado, M.D.

Hometown: St. Cloud, MN
Medical school: Mayo Clinic School of Medicine
Residency: McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, Chicago, IL
About me: I was born in Bogota, Colombia, but was primarily raised in central Florida and Minnesota. My wife, Kayla, and I have a daughter, Mila.
Why Mayo? I loved going to medical school at Mayo and graduating from MCSOM is one of my proudest accomplishments.

Katie Smith, M.D.

Katie Smith, M.D.

Hometown: Melbourne, FL
Medical school: University of Central Florida
Residency: Diagnostic Radiology Residency at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, Rochester, MN
About me: I grew up in the Central Florida area, went to college in Atlanta, and back to Orlando for medical school. I met my husband in medical school, and we couples-matched to diagnostic radiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. We're staying this year for fellowship, women’s imaging for myself and neuroradiology for my husband. We have two dogs (Alaskan malamute and pit bull) and two cats (an independent/sassy black tuxedo cat and a very snuggly gray tuxedo cat).
Why Mayo? I was very satisfied with the radiology residency here, so was more than happy to stay for my fellowship. Mayo has an excellent depth and breadth of cases, attentive and accomplished mentors, and an overall supportive work environment.

Kari Xiao, M.D.

Kari Xiao, M.D.

Hometown: Chicago suburbs, IL
Medical school: University of Illinois at Chicago
Residency: Diagnostic Radiology Residency at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, Rochester, MN
About me: I have an active lifestyle and run/walk/yoga/bike regularly. My husband and I have two huskies and a toddler who help us fulfill our step goals every day. On “off” weekends, we go up to the Twin Cities to fulfill our urbanite cravings.
Why Mayo? When we first moved to Rochester (from Chicago) four years ago, I didn’t think we’d be staying any longer than residency. However, Mayo did a world-class job not only in treating their patients, but also in maximizing education for their trainees. The radiology consultants here are leaders in the field, but humble and patient with any level of training in the reading room.

Alumni

The most important indicator of the success of a training program is found in the outcomes of the graduates upon completion of their training. Learn more about what our alumni have accomplished after graduating from the Mammography/Women's Imaging Fellowship.
