Clinical training
The Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, provides a full range of dermatologic care for both common and rare skin conditions and offers multiple subspecialty clinics. The department has 34 board-certified physicians in three areas of dermatology medical, surgical, and laboratory.
Their expertise includes caring for outpatients with complex medical conditions such as hidradenitis suppurativa, chronic wounds, autoimmune blistering diseases, rheumatologic/dermatologic diseases, severe eczema, severe psoriasis, lymphoma, cutaneous diseases with systemic manifestations, using systemic immunosuppressants and biologics to treat complex medical dermatologic conditions, and evaluating and managing skin disorders in critically ill hospitalized patients.
Many complex, uncommon, and common dermatologic conditions will be seen in the Department of Dermatology. The department offers a full range of dermatologic care with almost 59,000 dermatology outpatient visits each year, with 27% of appointments being 40-minute appointments that are allocated for complex medical dermatology cases.
You will receive direct supervision at the beginning of the program and a supervisor will always be available in the later stage of the program to review the complex cases with you.

Conferences
You will participate in weekly dermatology conferences with dermatology residents which include medical dermatology, dermatology surgery, pediatric derm, health care disparities, M&M Grand Rounds, lymphoma rounds, and Journal Clubs.
Hospital grand rounds are held on Thursday mornings. Cases from the hospital inpatient and consultation services are discussed with all members of the department for management challenges.
Dermatology clinical grand rounds are held Thursdays at noon. Residents and staff present interesting or difficult cases seen in the outpatient setting each week for informal discussion and review.
Research Opportunities
You will have great opportunities to be mentored by a number of faculty to work on research projects and have access to vast resources at Mayo Clinic.
Interdisciplinary subspecialty clinic, great resources for retrospective studies and involvement in ongoing department clinical trials.
Moonlighting
Moonlighting is acceptable as long as it does not overlap with your clinical duties.
Teaching opportunities
You will teach dermatology to medical students and residents in several ways. It is a good learning opportunity and also sharing your knowledge.
Evaluation
You and faculty are both evaluated via an online survey tool. Your comments will be anonymous. The survey is released monthly and reviewed quarterly. You can always access your performance folder online and seek informal feedback as well.
Mentorship
You will experience a supportive environment to nourish and empower your ability in both clinical and professional aspects. You will be mentored by a supervisor and other faculty involved in complex medical dermatology. There will be monthly meetings with your mentor(s).
International Opportunities
There is an international conference and meetings available for you to attend and present. A benefit to these opportunities is exposure to a variety of expertise outside of the United States and different dermatologic conditions that you are managing. You can participate by submitting research abstracts and within Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education policies.
