Curriculum

Two doctors from the Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship program in Rochester, Minnesota, review images at a computer station.

Mayo Clinic's Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship provides an opportunity for clinical radiology and research training at the advanced fellowship level.

During this fellowship, you receive advanced training in all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging in both outpatient and hospital radiology settings.

Rotation schedule
Rotation Length
Musculoskeletal radiographs 8 weeks
Musculoskeletal MRI 20 weeks*
Musculoskeletal ultrasound 2 weeks*
Musculoskeletal CT 6 weeks
Electives rotations 16 weeks

*May be increased with elective time

Elective rotations are flexible and can include time within or outside of musculoskeletal radiology. Musucloskeletal electives include spine intervention, on-site coverage at the Mayo Clinic Square in Minneapolis, and additional time on other MSK rotations.

Call frequency

Call is taken in one-week blocks. Frequency is variable based on the number of fellows each year, but typically ranges from seven to nine weeks over the course of the year. Mayo Clinic follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Didactic training

Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are all integral parts of the Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship.

For example, you:

  • Attend departmental and interdepartmental meetings and conferences
  • Develop and make presentations at departmental conferences
  • Attend journal club meetings
  • Prepare papers for presentation at research conferences

Research training

Your research opportunities at Mayo Clinic are outstanding. You are encouraged to participate in research projects with the consulting staff, which includes opportunities for clinical studies and laboratory-based projects.

You are required to participate in at least one research project over the course of your fellowship year. A program objective is that most research projects yield results that are suitable for presentation at scientific meetings and publication in peer-reviewed literature. Research projects with the goal of submission for publication and presentation at the end of the fellowship are suggested.

Teaching opportunities

You have the opportunity to teach residents, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine students, and visiting students from other medical schools through daily clinical work and formal didactic lectures.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop the appropriate technical skills to meet program expectations, your performance is monitored carefully during the Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship. You are formally evaluated by supervising faculty members quarterly. In addition, you regularly evaluate the faculty to confirm that your educational needs are being met.
