Meet The Faculty

Mayo Clinic's Department of Ophthalmology provides full-service subspecialty eye care in neuro-ophthalmology, treating conditions such as diplopia, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, multiple sclerosis, and nystagmus. At our campus in Jacksonville, Florida, we see over 2,000 neuro-ophthalmic outpatient visits per year. Our team is committed to ongoing research to improve the diagnosis, prognostication, and treatment of neuro-ophthalmologic diseases.

As a fellow in the Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship, you will be exposed to leading-edge procedures and equipment in our state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient facilities, while working with and learning from Mayo Clinic physicians that are highly regarded in their field. 

The Ophthalmology department has 12 staff physicians, the Neurology department has over 40 staff physicians, and Neurosurgery contains approximately 18 physicians. During training, you may also interact and collaborate with many other subspecialists including: neurosurgeons, medical oncologists, retina specialists, pediatric ophthalmologists, and oculoplastic surgeons.

Welcome to the Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida! Mayo Clinic's unique integrated patient-centered subspecialty practice provides the ideal environment for your clinical and research fellowship training. The fellowship operates in accord with Mayo Clinic's three shields: clinical practice, education, and research.

Our faculty are passionate about teaching, with over 50 years of combined education experience within neuro-ophthalmology, and are integrated into a world-class multispecialty group.

Professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Neurosurgery

Dr. Eggenberger completed his neurology residency at Loyola University Medical Center and a fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Mayo Clinic awarded him with the "Top Performing Provider" award in 2022 and the "Outstanding Faculty" award in 2018. 

Dr. Eggenberger's clinical interests include:

  • Neuro ophthalmology

Misha Pless, M.D.

Misha Pless, M.D.

Program Co-Director

Professor of Ophthalmology

Dr. Pless is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and is a board-certified member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. In previous roles, he has served as an associate professor at both Harvard Medical School and the University of Pittsburgh. 

Dr. Pless's clinical interests include:

  • Optic neuritis and demyelinating diseases
  • Inflammation of the optic pathways
  • Nystagmus and abnormal eye movements
  • Pituitary tumors affecting vision
  • Rare diseases of optic nerve and brain
  • Interdisciplinary work along neurosurgery, endocrinology, and rheumatology
