Clinical training

The Neuroradiology Fellowship provides an opportunity for state-of-the-art radiology clinical and research training at the fellowship level. Rotation Length
Diagnostic and procedural neuroradiology 42 weeks
Pediatric neuroradiology 4 weeks
Neurointerventional radiology 2 weeks

Call frequency

Fellows do not take overnight call as part of the Neuroradiology Fellowship.

Moonlighting

You may moonlight with program director approval. Moonlighting should not interfere with the required learning and must not violate the work-hour rules of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or visa regulations.

Didactic training

The Neuroradiology Fellowship experience centers on the reading room education. The fellow is assigned to a faculty member each day for one-on-one learning with case-by-case feedback. Additional critical educational experiences include didactic lectures, participation in numerous multidisciplinary clinical conferences, visiting professorships, journal clubs, and research seminars.

You are able to enhance your educational experience by teaching radiology residents, medical students, and rotating residents from other programs both at the workstation and formal teaching conferences.

Conferences

Weekly multidisciplinary conferences include clinical conferences in epilepsy, head and neck oncology, brain tumor board, spine, and neurovascular with multidisciplinary teaching conference each week in neuro-oncology and a weekly neuroscience Grand Round lecture series.

Research training

Mayo Clinic features world renowned research resources. Fellows are encouraged to participate in research projects with the consulting staff. This includes opportunities for clinical studies and laboratory-based projects. Dedicated research training is also available, including a lecture series in study design, manuscript preparation, biostatistics, etc. Fellows are provided approximately four weeks of research time throughout the academic year with the option of adding up to four weeks of additional research time during their elective rotation.

You progress from participating in existing research programs within the department to formulating an original program of investigation. The specific timetable for this progression depends on your prior experience. You are assigned an advisor from the department based on your research interest. The advisor may be changed during the fellowship.

Individual research projects require advocacy and supervision by a staff member of the Department of Radiology — usually the advisor, but not always. In general, written plans for individual projects are submitted to the department research committee for assistance. Full editorial services are available to the fellow free of charge.

A program objective is that the primary research project yields results that are suitable for presentation at scientific meetings and publication in peer-reviewed literature. Fellows receive dedicated research days. They also receive financial support for travel, lodging, meals, and registration fees for meetings at which they present and for one non-presentation (attendance) trip.

Teaching opportunities

You have the opportunity to teach radiology residents, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine students, and visiting students from other medical schools through daily clinical work and formal didactic lectures.

Fellows also have the opportunity to teach non-radiology faculty and trainees through numerous multidisciplinary conferences.

Career development

You meet periodically with various faculty members, administrators, and the program director to discuss your career goals. Mayo Clinic recruits many of its staff physicians from its own training programs, so when you successfully complete the Neuroradiology Fellowship, job opportunities may be available at one of Mayo Clinic's group practices.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance is monitored carefully during the Neuroradiology Fellowship. You are evaluated formally by your supervising faculty after each clinical rotation. In addition, you regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.
