My fellowship at Mayo Clinic was easily one of the most defining experiences of my entire career. Coming from cardiac critical care, I didn’t have to pivot to obstetric anesthesiology; I chose to, because I loved the field and I loved the environment that Mayo created around it. Every single day, I was surrounded by people who were not only brilliant clinicians but also incredible teachers, colleagues, and human beings.
What made it special wasn’t just the depth of knowledge or the complexity of the cases; it was the culture. It was being part of a team that truly believed in the mission of patient-centered care, where excellence wasn’t demanded through pressure, but inspired through example. The mentorship I received there fundamentally changed how I think, how I teach, and how I lead, even in my current professional setting.
To this day, I still carry that sense of purpose and pride that Mayo instilled in me. It wasn’t just a year of more training; it was a year of rediscovering why I love this profession. I walked away a better physician, but more importantly, a better version of myself that I get to share with the world, my new colleagues and partners.
