Meet The Faculty

Faculty in the Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Mayo Clinic

Our orthopedic surgeons are renowned both nationally and internationally for their technical precision and innovative approaches to treating a wide range of orthopedic conditions, from routine to highly complex cases. By partnering with leading scientists in our biomechanics and regenerative medicine research facilities, our team pioneers new treatments that enhance recovery, accelerate rehabilitation, and improve patient outcomes.

Few academic programs can match the depth of expertise and dedication that Mayo Clinic offers. Our faculty is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of surgeons, providing residents and fellows with the comprehensive training and hands-on experience needed to excel as clinicians and researchers. While Mayo Clinic is well-known for addressing rare and challenging conditions, we also provide exceptional care to patients in our surrounding communities and regions.

From the program director

Peter Murray, M.D.Welcome to the Mayo Clinic in Florida Orthopedic Surgery Residency program. We have developed an excellent, multidisciplinary training program where you will develop into a high-quality, efficient orthopedic surgeon.

Our training program has an exceptional learning environment with diverse faculty and is unique as nearly all your time will be spent in the greater Jacksonville area with rotations at Mayo Clinic in Florida, Nemours Children’s Clinic, and the UF Health Science Center with only one away rotation which is at the Mayo Clinic Rochester campus. This program focuses early on surgical fundamentals and basic orthopedic education allowing progressive autonomy.

Trainees are supported with work-life balance in mind.  Our department is structured with a one-on-one surgeon/advanced practitioner model whereby the resident is not overly burdened by service responsibilities and can concentrate on learning orthopedic surgery.  Trainees are also supported by robust research, online learning resources, as well as a 10,000-square-foot simulation/procedural center.

Trainee feedback is sought at the end of each rotation and used in real-time to help direct these rotations to meet individual resident needs.  Residents are encouraged to be involved in the leadership of our department throughout their residency experience. Opportunities exist to participate in the Mayo Clinic in Florida Residents and Fellows Council as well as our departmental belonging committee.
