Curriculum

Trainees in the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship rotate to Phoenix Children's Hospital for elective and required pediatric experiences. During the first year of fellowship, you will learn the basic management of pediatric surgical patients to lay the foundation for a career in pediatric surgery. In the second year of fellowship, you will refine your clinical skills and prepare to be an independent practitioner.

Year one

The first year of fellowship consists of 12 months of focused care of the pediatric surgery patient. As a fellow, you will spend a minimum of nine months on the pediatric surgery service. The remaining three months consist of one month on the PICU service, one month on the NICU service (at an offsite location), and one month on the urology service.

You also have the opportunity to make rounds in the PICU or NICU with the critical care team to gain a better understanding of the management styles of their pediatric colleagues. You may also spend time with services such as gastroenterology, urology, neurosurgery, and cardiothoracic surgery to gain an enhanced technical experience with procedures rarely performed on the pediatric surgery service. This time with other services is intended to allow the pediatric surgery fellow a more complete experience.

The junior fellow should be prepared to lead the pediatric surgery service when the chief fellow is unavailable.

Year two

The second year of fellowship consists of 12 months on the pediatric surgery service. As a second-year fellow, you have opportunities to spend additional time with services such as gastroenterology, urology, neurosurgery, and cardiothoracic surgery to gain technical experience that you feel is important to your training.

The chief fellow has the responsibility of leading the pediatric surgery team. The chief fellow has a leadership role in the coordination of the educational program and conferences and has some supervisorial roles with the junior fellow, residents, and medical students.
