Meet The Faculty

Our faculty are dedicated to maintaining a supportive learning environment and consider fellow education as one of the most rewarding parts of their careers. In addition to holding many leadership positions within Mayo Clinic, our faculty members hold or have held many national leadership positions as well. The medical staff of the Center for Sleep Medicine have expertise in sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine, neurology, psychiatry, internal medicine, and other areas.

All of the sleep medicine faculty members are diplomates of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, which is a very exclusive club with only 3,445 members worldwide.

From the program director

Philip Lyng, M.D.Welcome to our fellowship program!

We are delighted to tell you more about our Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. The Sleep Medicine practice began in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1995. The Mayo Clinic sleep lab was built with the opening of Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona in 1998 and remodeled in 2019. After many years of preparation, the fellowship program enrolled the first fellow in 2023.

The fellowship promotes a strong foundation in patient care beginning in the outpatient clinic. Each fellow will have a weekly continuity clinic in addition to clinical rotations with each of our robust and multidisciplinary faculty members. They will be exposed to a broad range of clinical pathology and advanced treatment options such as hypoglossal nerve stimulation, myofunctional therapy, phrenic nerve stimulation, and various medical therapies.  The program is further enriched by daily interactions with the sleep technicians and advanced practice providers. Fellows will also participate in a pediatric sleep medicine experience through our collaboration with Phoenix Children's Hospital. The collegial and patient care-focused environment of Mayo Clinic allows for elective rotations and interactions with multiple other specialties including otorhinolaryngology, pulmonary, and cardiology. Our fellow can also rotate at other Mayo Clinic sites for increased exposure to specialty areas such as sleep dentistry.

Our American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited sleep lab has six beds available and offers overnight polysomnography, 24-hour polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing, actigraphy, and home sleep testing. Our fellow will learn the technical aspect of sleep testing by working with the sleep technicians early in the fellowship. Throughout the year, the fellow will be experienced and comfortable with the interpretation of each of these studies.

Education is prioritized throughout Mayo Clinic as an institution, and this commitment is evident in the sleep medicine fellowship with weekly conferences and lectures including journal club, research conference, and case conference.

In addition to providing the best possible educational experience for our fellow, our esteemed faculty are highly active in research. With their support and the internal support from Mayo Clinic, the fellow has multiple opportunities to participate in research ranging from independent projects to clinical trials.

Thank you for your interest in our fellowship. Please reach out with questions or if you would like additional information about our program. We look forward to meeting you soon.
