The most important indicator of the success of a training program is found in the outcomes of the graduates upon completion of their training. The Surgical Pathology Fellowship program in Rochester, Minnesota, officially started training fellows in 1998 and became ACGME accredited in 2006.

"The Surgical Pathology fellowship prepared me for my future career by providing a combination of the tremendous frozen section case variety and complex subspecialty electives that vastly expanded my awareness of diagnostic entities, pitfalls, and mimickers — especially within those organ systems with which I am least familiar. As a future subspecialist, this awareness is critical in expanding my differential diagnoses and refining my intuition for when cases should be shared with colleagues.  Additionally, this fellowship has calibrated my 'eye' to the point that I feel comfortable interpreting all varieties of frozen sections, including neuropath smears. I have gained wisdom about when and when-not to push a diagnosis at frozen section, the limitations of the technique, and the pragmatic nuances of the decisions we make — and I now feel confident to independently interpret frozen sections!"
