In addition, residents have opportunities for one-on-one teaching and learning with senior residents and staff. There are interactive videoconferences between Mayo Clinic campuses.

Research training

Your research opportunities at Mayo Clinic are outstanding. You are required to complete a research project with your categorical program. Working with the consulting staff, you may work on part of an ongoing study or develop a specific, individual, short-term project. You are encouraged to take advantage of our research support services, which include biostatisticians and medical editors.

The overnight float system is used for overnight call. Overnight shifts vary depending on the rotations but are no more frequent than every four days. The Transitional Year Residency adheres to all duty-hour guidelines mandated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Program Evaluation Committee

You are encouraged to participate in the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) or other administrative committees at Mayo Clinic. The PEC committee meets twice during each academic year to conduct the Annual Program Evaluation (APE).

Moonlighting is not permitted during the Transitional Year Residency.

Teaching opportunities

You participate in educating medical students while on rotations.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance is monitored carefully during your residency. You are formally evaluated by your supervising faculty member after each clinical rotation, and you meet regularly with the program director to discuss your progress. In addition, you evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.
