The Department of Medicine Medical Grand Rounds (MGR) is a weekly conference intended to educate health care providers on best practices. These weekly conferences address current topics in clinical medicine, research, health care policy, medical education, and satisfy criteria for Continuing Medical Education (CME).

Each week looks a little different with a variety of topics and presenters, but recently, nine third-year medical students within Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine on the Florida campus took the stage to share some of their research, education, and service initiatives.

Last year Shannon Coombs went above and beyond as she organized the 'A December to Remember' event in her role as Community Service Chair of the American Medical Women's Association. Collaborating with a local non-profit, Arizona State University, and fellow students, she facilitated a holiday health fair featuring education, activities, and even organized the fulfillment of a holiday wishlist for participants.

Kyle Robinson: Mada Clinics

An inside look into Kyle Robinson's work with Mada Clinics in rural Northern Madagascar. Robinson not only volunteered his time and skills at the clinic, but after learning the founder was no longer able to run the clinic and it was at risk of shutting down, he helped secure a 501(c)(3) non-profit status, and continues to work to establish a monthly donor base to continue operations.

Johanny Lopez Dominguez not only completed a research project on patient diversity in second year medical school curriculum, but she's taking strides to move the needle towards more equitable representation. Her goal is to promote equity, improve representation, and minimize unintentional reinforcement of student bias. Learn more about how she's working with leadership and how the medical school is working at a national level to change our curricula based on the deficits identified by her project.

Ijoni Lisha: Bounce Day Selective Experience

With a passion for education, Ijoni Lisha took the opportunity to lead the Bounce Day Selective for fellow medical students. Bounce Day is a simulated disaster event where students practice and use their exam, care, and rescue skills to 'bounce back' and treat patients in a, shall we say, unique environment. Hear his story and learn more about the Bounce Day Selective!

After completing a Selective in medical Spanish, Hannah Case had an opportunity to visit the Hospital William Allen Taylor in Turrialba, Costa Rica. Learn about her experiences as she was able to explore her passion for global health and use her skills to help treat the Cabécar population.
