The Undergraduate Plummer Scholars Plus (UPS+) Summer Program is a week-long program hosted at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona. The intensive program allows students to explore the physician profession and prepare for medical school admissions.

Guided by a team of faculty and staff, UPS summer scholars will participate in clinical shadowing activities as well as workshops and sessions aimed at developing skills and strategies for the medical school admissions process. 

The full Undergraduate Plummer Scholars program runs from October to May. The week-long UPS+ Summer Program is held in June and is followed by weekly virtual webinars to increase exposure to various specialties in medicine.

Following the UPS+ summer program, scholars receive MCAT preparation through the Princeton Review, including 66 hours of instruction, practice tests, books and resources, and hotline assistance. Long-term mentorship with a Mayo Clinic physician helps ensure that scholars are well-supported in their journey to medical school.

Prerequisites

The UPS+ Summer Program is open to current sophomores or equivalent who are part of the Undergraduate Plummer Scholars academic year program. Applicants must have a strong interest in attending medical school and pursuing a career as a physician. 

Application timeline

Your application and all supporting documentation must be received by Feb. 2, 2024, 10 a.m. MST. The 2024 program is scheduled to run through July 2024. Dates are June 3-7 and July 14 -20 for the in-person sessions, in addition to four weeks of virtual one-hour weekly sessions from April 26-May 17, at noon MST.

2. Complete each section of the application and submit
3. After submission, view the required Supplemental Items and Documents
   • The required supplemental documents are one letter of recommendation and a copy of your unofficial transcript
   • Upload each required item in the Supplemental Items section 
   • Complete the Recommendation Request section

Acceptance

After applications are reviewed, notices of appointment will be sent out on March 8.
