Advanced Level
This cohort is designed for midwives with at least three years of clinical experience and who desire additional skills in high-risk and complex obstetrics. The curriculum is flexible and can be tailored to individual fellow needs and interests.
Possible experiences include complex/high-risk prenatal care with our complex care midwives and/or maternal fetal medicine specialists; training in first-assist; training in ultrasound; opportunities to train in the GYN clinic (colposcopy, pessary fitting, care following third/fourth degree lacerations); and opportunities to train with other specialty care-team members (OB mental health, diabetic educators, etc.).
Trainee experience
The Nurse-Midwifery fellowship program combines didactic and clinical training over a 12-month period. Fellows will participate in outpatient (prenatal visits) and inpatient care (triage, labor and delivery, and postpartum), as well as regular education sessions, journal clubs, leadership development, and mentorship opportunities. Fellows will be supported in the completion of a quality improvement or research project at a Mayo Clinic site. Fellows will complete Team STEPPS and ALSO training; additional specialized training can also be discussed. Additionally, fellows will attend the ACNM annual conference or another conference of similar caliber as part of the program.
Clinical training and rotations
Advanced Level Nurse-Midwifery fellows will complete inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences at three different facilities. Fellows will train in Rochester, Minnesota for their first six months, before rotating to two different Mayo Clinic Health System sites for three months each. Fellows will train in two types of clinical practices — the tertiary care setting in Rochester, and two regional health system hub sites. Possible locations include: Mankato, MN; Eau Claire, WI, or La Crosse, WI.
Facilities
Advanced Level Nurse-Midwifery fellows will work in the Rochester-based midwifery practice for the first 6-months of their fellowship. Patients are seen in the outpatient obstetric clinic in the Charlton building, and births are attended at the Family Birth Center in the Eisenberg building. Clinical rotations will also occur throughout the Mayo Clinic Health System at two different sites, for 3-months each. Possible sites include Mankato, Eau Claire, or La Crosse.
