Overview
The one-year Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Jacksonville, Florida, is an interprofessional postgraduate program for advanced practice providers.
The Hospice and Palliative Medicine APP Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, will provide:
- A 12-month program consisting of in-person didactics, simulation, and unique elective rotations to provide comprehensive training in multidisciplinary, holistic pain and symptom management for patients with serious illnesses
- Deepened understanding of the complex interplay between serious illness and palliative care needs that are unique to each patient
- Knowledge in the assessment and management of complex pain and non-pain symptom management at a sub-specialty level, and perform spiritual, psychosocial, and cultural assessments
- Experiences in complex pain management, non-pain symptom management, pharmacology, and advanced communication skills
- Exposure to palliative care delivery models in a variety of inpatient and outpatient specialized settings with opportunities to collaborate with a wide range of other specialty areas at Mayo Clinic
- Enhanced research training through completion of a quality improvement project, training in basic research skills, involvement in scholarly review activities, and clinical education

Program highlights
The NP/PA Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship delivers the essential clinical, didactic, and research components of subspecialty-level hospice and palliative care. Fellows who complete the clinical year will be able to evaluate and manage patients across the continuum of palliative care from diagnosis through end of life. This includes primary inpatient, outpatient, and consultative palliative care as well as home and facility-based hospice.
Training will be provided in a warm, welcoming environment with a multidisciplinary team who are passionate about palliative medicine education and advancement of the field.
Completion and certification
After successfully completing this Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Florida, fellows receive a certificate of completion from Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences.
Fellows will have also received the comprehensive training and education needed to apply and sit for their respective board certification exams:
- Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Medicine certification (ACHPN) via the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center for Nurse Practitioners
- Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Palliative Medicine and Hospice Care via the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants for Physician Assistants.
