Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences is excited to offer one 12-month, full-time, paid Speech-Language Pathology Clinical Fellowship in the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. This clinical fellowship will emphasize the evaluation and treatment of adults with neurogenic speech-language-communication disorders and dysphagia within both the acute care hospital and acute rehabilitation settings. Program goals

Our program goals are consistent with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) guidelines for the speech-language pathology clinical fellowship as outlined in the publication 2020 Standards and Implementation Procedures for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology.

These ASHA-specific goals are to:

• Integrate and apply theoretical knowledge to clinical practice and patient care for patient populations across the acute care and inpatient rehabilitation settings.
• Evaluate strengths and identify limitations
• In patient care
• In self-assessment of skills and knowledge
• Refine clinical skills within the Scope of Practice in Speech-Language Pathology
• Apply the ASHA Code of Ethics to independent professional practice
• Demonstrate the ability to perform clinical activities accurately, consistently, and independently, and seek guidance, as necessary.

Goals specific to this fellowship include:

• Independent completion of evaluation and interpretation of results to form clinical diagnosis.
• Development and implementation of appropriate and effective treatment plans based on accurate assessment
• Independent ability to perform and interpret video fluoroscopic swallow studies.
• Timely and accurate completion of documentation that reflects individualized patient care.
• Effective communication skills are essential for dynamic interaction on multidisciplinary teams including physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, and other hospital staff.
• Implementation of evidence-based problem solving as part of a collaborative team.

Completion and certification

Successful completion of the clinical fellowship experience will be confirmed by your clinical mentors per the requirements of ASHA to obtain the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology. Additionally, upon successful completion of the fellowship, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences.
