Radiologists and staff in the Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, provide the highest quality diagnostic and interventional imaging services in a caring and efficient manner, while sustaining outstanding programs in research and education.

This 115-year-old department — one of the first of its kind — is fully integrated with all the medical services available throughout Mayo Clinic. More than 200 radiologists and physicists cooperate with 1,100 support staff to provide diagnostic and therapeutic radiology services to patients.

Facilities

Experts in all areas of radiology consult with specialists in other departments to provide the best care to every patient every day, consistent with Mayo Clinic's mission. Radiologists work with state-of-the-art equipment, assisted by skilled technologists and nurses, to perform and interpret more than 1 million examinations yearly. This large number of cases, integrated with ongoing research and education, results in wide-ranging expertise in the imaging and treatment of diseases affecting patients of all ages.

The department's equipment includes:

  • 30 clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, including 16 3-Tesla magnets. Plus, the department has an additional three full-time dedicated research magnets.
  • 19 clinical computed tomography (CT) scanners, including nine dual source scanners. Two additional CT scanners are dedicated to research.
  • 45 ultrasound machines.
  • Seven interventional suites.

The nuclear radiology practice includes:

  • 20 nuclear medicine cameras
  • Five positron emission computed tomography (PET/CT) scanners
  • Two cardiac PET scanners
  • One PET/MRI scanner
  • Two cyclotrons

Our fellowship program is designed to provide a rich and comprehensive learning experience, preparing graduates for successful and gratifying careers in cardiothoracic radiology.

Mayo Clinic provides an exceptional educational environment in a state-of-the-art Department of Radiology supported by outstanding allied health staff. Our fellows work side-by-side with leading experts in thoracic and cardiac imaging in the diagnosis and management of patients presenting with the full spectrum of clinical conditions—from common to complex and rare. This close working relationship is a particular strength of the program, affording the benefit of real-time case-based learning and feedback. Clinical and academic conferences with referring colleagues in consistently top-rated departments including pulmonary medicine, cardiovascular medicine, medical oncology, radiation oncology, thoracic surgery, and cardiovascular surgery are also an important facet of the program. The breadth and volume of clinical practice, multidisciplinary conferences, and didactic teaching provide program graduates with the knowledge and experience essential to the practice of subspecialty cardiothoracic imaging.

The fellowship emphasizes chest radiography, thoracic CT, cardiac CT, and cardiac MRI with additional training provided in thoracic MRI, CT and MR angiography, and image-guided thoracic interventions. Flexibility within the curriculum allows trainees to tailor their training to meet their educational and career needs.

Mayo Clinic offers extensive opportunities for research. Fellows are encouraged to actively participate in research projects which frequently lead to conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

Faculty

In addition to caring for patients in clinical practice, Mayo Clinic's faculty is committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty members have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields. You work closely with these individuals throughout your training in the Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship.

Faculty advisers are available to provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. You meet regularly with your adviser throughout the program to review your progress and career goals and to ensure your educational needs are being met. Your adviser may serve as a contact point for introducing you and your family to Mayo Clinic and Rochester, Minnesota.

Visiting professors

Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during lectures, participate in hospital rounds and have informal discussions with trainees. You are encouraged to take full advantage of these educational opportunities.
