Mayo Clinic's Department of Clinical Genomics offers adults and children comprehensive evaluation and care for inherited disorders. Included within the department are specialized clinics for individuals with inborn errors of metabolism, neurofibromatosis, von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, hereditary cancer, Marfan syndrome, and other connective tissue disorders. Mayo Clinic's Cytogenetics, Molecular, and Biochemical Genetics laboratories are some of the largest and well-respected laboratories in the country. The collaboration between these laboratories creates an optimal setting for patient care and for training. Optional fellowships in genetic labs are available.

Faculty

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their field. You will have direct access to these individuals throughout your training program.

Throughout the Medical Genetics Residency, you will interact with the teaching faculty and staff.

Advisors and mentors

Medical genetics residents are supervised by geneticists who are certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) in medical genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics, and biochemical genetics.

As you gain increasing independence and confidence and your clinical skills grow, you will see and evaluate patients independently. However, throughout the residency – for particularly complex or unusual cases – the staff is always available for further assistance and input.

Visiting speakers

Many prominent speakers visit Mayo Clinic each year to present their work during grand rounds and may participate in hospital rounds. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.
