Dermatology trainees in the procedure room

The most important indicator of the success of a training program is found in the outcomes of the graduates upon completion of their training. Recent graduates of Mayo Clinic’s Dermatology Residency practice in all regions of the United States and around the world. They oftentimes become leaders in their practices, local and national societies, and sub-specialty societies.

Here’s what a few of our graduates have to say about their experience in the program.

What do you find most unique about this program?

The most unique aspect of the Dermatology Residency program is our continuity clinic. While most residency programs either do not have a resident continuity clinic or have limited availability to participate in such a setting, at our program, all resident clinics are continuity clinics. Residents assume ownership of their patients from day one and will follow these individuals for the entire duration of their residency training. The patients come to see you as their primary dermatologist with consultants readily available to lend their expertise. This model provides an unparalleled and extremely rewarding educational experience that allows you to be well-prepared to practice all aspects of dermatology upon graduation.

“Residents finishing the program are very well-trained and that is what I was looking for. It is a pleasure to learn and work with our faculty and many are well-known leaders within the field of dermatology. In addition to receiving excellent residency training, Jacksonville is just an amazing place to live and work. The available activities along with the excellent weather has drawn a lot of visiting friends and family from other parts of the country every year.”

“The Dermatology Residency program at Mayo is truly one of a kind! You get a great mix of general dermatology, complex medical dermatology, cosmetics, dermatopathology, and surgery! Since our general clinic days, about five to six half-days per week, are 100% continuity, you really have the opportunity to take ownership of your patients and that provides an exceptional educational opportunity! The staff are some of the kindest people you will meet and over your three years this place will definitely start to feel like home.”

“My training at Mayo Clinic has instilled a set of values and principles that are simple, timeless, and reproducibly effective when applied regularly.  According to William J. Mayo, “Given one well-trained physician of the highest type he will do better work for 1,000 people than 10 specialists." I’m continuously humbled by the opportunity to provide care for patients in their most vulnerable state.”

“My training in dermatology at Mayo gave me a strong foundation to pursue a career in private practice right after graduation. The strong core basic science curriculum of the program has allowed me to keep up with the ever-changing pharmacology of our field and advanced treatment options for my patients. Moving to Jacksonville for three years to immerse myself in all that was offered within the department was one of the best things I have ever done!”

“Mayo Clinic was my top choice for residency and I am extremely grateful for the training I received. The support and opportunities given to residents is unparalleled and the faculty were outstanding. We learned from the best in the nation. We saw the ideal combination of rarities and bread-and-butter cases. The opportunity to care for our own patients and follow them throughout the course of residency gave me the best preparation for practice upon graduation.”
