The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, treats local and international patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases. This diverse mix of patients creates an optimal environment for learning.

The division performs more than 12,000 outpatient procedures each year, including advanced procedures such as endoscopic ultrasound, laser and photodynamic therapy, esophageal stents, PEG, ERCP, and enteroscopy. Esophageal and gastroduodenal motility testing, anorectal function tests, and esophageal pH tests also are performed.

The hospital practice includes referral patients with difficult problems involving nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease and hepatobiliary disease. Our liver transplant program began in January 1998 and has rapidly grown into one of the most active programs in the country. The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology supervises the Nutrition Support Service, which manages patients receiving enteral or parenteral nutrition.

During your Gastroenterology Fellowship, you have access to these resources and support services:

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty members have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields. You have direct access to these individuals throughout your training.

The gastroenterology and hepatology staff at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida includes more than 20 gastroenterologists with a broad range of expertise. Four consultants serve as full-time hepatologists.

Advisers and mentors

You are assigned a faculty adviser who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. The adviser also serves as a contact point, introducing you and your family to Mayo Clinic and the communities in which you will train.

Visiting professors

Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year and present their work during lectures. Residents and fellows are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to interact with experts from other academic centers and are relieved from clinical assignments to do so.
