Positions

Four categorical positions are available each year in the General Surgery Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona.

Qualifications

Applicants for the General Surgery Residency at Mayo Clinic must be in good standing in their fourth year of medical school or must have successfully graduated from medical school prior to the match. The program leadership will review all applications and do not use minimum scores in standardized exams as an absolute criteria for selection.

How to apply

You must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and follow all ERAS deadlines.

Note that both components of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 2 must be passed by April 1 of the current academic year to ensure eligibility in this residency by July 1.

1. All applications to Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education residencies and fellowships must include these materials as supporting documentation.
   • Curriculum vitae
     • Describe your activities with professional societies, publications, and any other relevant information about your education or experience.
   • Personal statement of professional goals
   • Copy of diploma from your medical school, graduate school and/or dental school (if applicable)
   • Dean's letter
     • Provide a copy of the summary letter from the dean’s office of your medical, graduate, and/or dental school.
   • Official final transcripts (if applicable)
     • Transcripts must indicate degree earned and date conferred from each medical school you attended.
     • Provide certified or notarized English translations of documents originally written in a language other than English.
   • Official test transcripts for all applicable examinations
     • USMLE, LMCC, COMLEX, NBOME, FMGEMS, FLEX, or NBME.
   • Valid ECFMG certificate required if you graduated from a medical school outside the U.S. or Canada.
   • Four original letters of recommendation preferred. Minimum three letters, at least one should be a Chair letter.
2. Appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates must register through the NRMP website.
3. Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited for an interview with the program director and selected faculty.
4. The program will send out interview notifications approximately one month after the date that the applications are made available to the program by the NRMP.
5. Interviews are conducted from November through January each year.
