Department and Faculty

The Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, provides services for more than 110,000 outpatient visits each year. The state-of-the-art facilities and equipment at Mayo Clinic enable you to participate in cutting-edge diagnostics and procedures.

The Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester has more than 30 faculty members, including four Ph.D. researchers, three of whom are involved in glaucoma research. The glaucoma service includes two glaucoma specialists who are active in all aspects of medical and surgical care of patients with complex glaucomas.

Fellowship director

Arthur Sit, M.D.Arthur J. Sit, M.D., is the director of the Glaucoma Fellowship. He trained as a mechanical engineer, earning an undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto and a postgraduate degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then completed medical school and residency at the University of Toronto, followed by a glaucoma fellowship at the University of California, San Diego.

Afterward, Dr. Sit joined the faculty at Mayo Clinic, where his practice is limited to glaucoma and anterior segment surgery. His research has focused on aqueous humor dynamics, epidemiology, genetics, and the evaluation and development of novel diagnostic and surgical devices. He has received research funding from the American Glaucoma Society, BrightFocus Foundation, National Institutes of Health and Research to Prevent Blindness.

Dr. Sit is the research committee chair of the American Glaucoma Society, a member of the board of directors for the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the Associate Advisory Board for the World Glaucoma Association.

Faculty

In addition to caring for patients in clinical practice, Mayo Clinic's faculty is committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Nearly all of our ophthalmic subspecialists have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their field. You have direct access to these individuals throughout your training in the Glaucoma Fellowship.

Advisers and mentors

You are assigned a dedicated faculty adviser who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. Trainees meet with their advisers periodically throughout the program to review their progress and career goals, and ensure that their educational needs are being met. Your adviser also serves as a contact point for introducing you and your family to Rochester, Minnesota, and the Mayo Clinic system.

Visiting professors

Mayo Clinic has an active visiting professor program with many prominent professors visiting Mayo each year. They present their work during lectures, participate in hospital rounds and have informal discussions with trainees. You are encouraged to take full advantage of these educational opportunities.
