Overview
The one-year Glaucoma Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, provides broad experience in the management of patients with all types of glaucoma. You acquire expertise in all modalities of therapy, including:
- Medical therapy
- Laser trabeculoplasty
- Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
- Trabeculectomy
- Tube shunts
- Cyclodestructive procedures
In addition, you develop proficiency in complex cataract surgery in patients with glaucoma, including small pupils, zonular dehiscence, post-trabeculectomy and combined surgeries.
As part of Mayo Clinic's large tertiary referral ophthalmology group, you also gain extensive experience with complex glaucoma cases that require co-management with other subspecialties. These include:
- Pediatric glaucoma
- Secondary glaucoma in patients with keratoprosthesis
- Uveitic and steroid-induced glaucoma
- Neovascular glaucoma
During the Glaucoma Fellowship, you have the opportunity to conduct and participate in cutting-edge research, including clinical trials, clinical outcomes and epidemiology, aqueous humor dynamics, and the development of novel diagnostic instruments.

Program history
The Glaucoma Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, began in 2015. We anticipate that one trainee will complete this program annually.
