This is a phenomenal program. Fellows receive exceptional clinical and surgical training, with a particular emphasis on trabeculectomy and tube shunts. The faculty are kind, caring, generous, and devoted to teaching. There are also immeasurable opportunities in research. I was grateful to have the support and mentorship to undertake a prospective study during my fellowship year. This fellowship prepared me extremely well for a career in academic glaucoma from a clinical, surgical, research, and personal perspective. I started my practice confident and well-prepared to take care of complex surgical patients after my time at Mayo. This program was life-changing; I continue to be in touch regularly with all three of my beloved mentors, who continue to provide wonderful guidance!

The Glaucoma Fellowship at Mayo Clinic provides high-quality clinical, surgical, educational, and research experience in an excellent one-year program. I'm grateful to have worked with multiple faculty mentors who each provided unique insights and were eager to teach. I managed a wide range of glaucoma types and severity levels and provided collaborative care with other subspecialties. I gained valuable surgical experience performing trabeculectomies, glaucoma tubes, minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS), pediatric glaucoma surgeries, and complex cataract surgeries. The glaucoma fellowship has prepared me well for a career as a glaucoma specialist.

This fellowship was a transformative year for me. The collegial environment in Rochester fostered deep engagement with colleagues within the glaucoma department, as well as across the ophthalmic subspecialties and the residency program. Mayo Clinic’s mentors are dedicated and caring professionals who provided me with the proper surgical skills and clinical reasonings for patient care and services in an autonomous setting.

Mayo Clinic is known for its excellence in medical care and its glaucoma service at the Rochester, Minnesota, campus is no different. The glaucoma fellow consistently encounters patients with diverse and severe pathology. This, in turn, familiarizes them to a wide variety of disease entities in glaucoma requiring surgical intervention. Apart from MIGS and glaucoma drainage devices, trainees are heavily exposed to trabeculectomy, which is one of the strengths of the program. To complement the pathology seen at Mayo Clinic glaucoma service, your future mentors (Drs. Sit, Khanna, and Roddy—who were also my mentors) are very knowledgeable, and approachable. They will provide you with supervised training but also the necessary autonomy to become a competent glaucoma specialist. In addition to clinical work, this program provides opportunities and resources to be involved in research projects that can advance the understanding of glaucoma. The Glaucoma Fellowship at Mayo Clinic is an excellent program and ensures that one will become a competent glaucoma specialist following completion of training.
